The Cinnamon Coffee Cake Recipe That Is Far From Ordinary!

When I go to coffee shops, the first thing I always order other than that giant cup of café latte, is a slice of cinnamon bun with cream cheese frosting. It’s my set of comfort food that never fails to cheer me up. I never put sugar in my coffee. I love tasting the raw bitter flavor of the coffee beans. The aroma of the coffee itself doesn’t give justice to the taste. I will not be able to experience that if I put sugar; though I do indulge myself with some milk. This coffee tastes best with the cinnamon buns. The slightly salty cream cheese frosting complements the sweetness of the bun. And it melts in the mouth!

I used to often wonder if there’s a dessert that would put two of my favorite things together. After searching in every bakery and restaurant, I found out that there’s such a thing as cinnamon coffee cake. It’s quite pretty common in bakeries now actually, except that I haven’t really found the taste that caters to my preferences until I came across this recipe at Taste of Home. This one allows the flavor of the coffee to shine, but at the same time there’s that subtle hint of cinnamon that adds a nice twist.

I have made this for several times and I haven’t gotten tired of the taste! I keep adding several new ingredients, but the original taste remains, just enhanced by the new onslaught of flavors that I put in just for the sake of experimentation. I have to say that this is one flexible dish. You can add anything you want as long as it’s in moderation.

Our friend Eleonor from Taste of Home has this to say about this recipe:
“I love the excellent texture of this old-fashioned streusel-topped coffee cake. Always a crowd-pleaser, its pleasing vanilla flavor enriched by sour cream may remind you of breakfast at Grandma’s!”
It does! Grandma used to make these types of recipes just for everyone. She loved making cakes, pies, and casseroles that she knew we would all love. There are times when I couldn’t help but remember the days we all spent watching her cook in her kitchen. Oh God. There you go. This dish will cause you to be sentimental!
